The Tougaloo College baseball team opened HBCU Athletic Conference play with a hard-fought series victory over Philander Smith University, winning two of three games at Earl Sanders Field over the weekend.
After dropping the opening game on Saturday, the Bulldogs responded with back-to-back wins to claim the series 2–1, highlighted by a dramatic offensive surge in the finale.
Game 1: Philander Smith 4, Tougaloo 3
The Bulldogs opened conference play with a narrow 4–3 loss to Philander Smith on Saturday.
Robert Powe led Tougaloo offensively with two hits and one RBI. James Magee and Javon Johnson each recorded one hit and one run, while Gage Lewis and Grant Carmichael both added one hit and one RBI.
Blake Bostic also recorded a hit, and Lekeidric Sutton crossed the plate for a run in the close contest.
Game 2: Tougaloo 7, Philander Smith 2
Tougaloo bounced back in Game 2, defeating the Panthers 7–2 to even the series at one game apiece.
Blake Bostic paced the Bulldogs with two runs, one hit, and one RBI, while James Magee added two runs and a hit. Robert Powe delivered a big performance at the plate with one hit and four RBIs.
Gage Lewis contributed one hit and one RBI, and Graelan Shaffer added an RBI. Travarez Thomas, Grant Carmichael, and Chandler Wade each scored a run for Tougaloo.
On the mound, Braylon Smith earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six batters.
Game 3: Tougaloo 16, Philander Smith 12
The Bulldogs completed the series victory in dramatic fashion on Sunday, scoring nine runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 16–12 win.
Gage Lewis led the offensive explosion with three hits and three RBIs, while Graelan Shaffer scored three runs and added two hits. Lekeidric Sutton and Javon Johnson each finished with two runs, two hits, and two RBIs.
Robert Powe recorded two runs, two hits, and one RBI, and Blake Bostic added two runs and two hits. Chandler Wade delivered a strong performance with one run, two hits, and three RBIs, while James Magee contributed one run, one hit, and two RBIs. Grant Carmichael also scored two runs in the victory.
Relief pitcher Khalil Rufus secured the win for Tougaloo, earning his first collegiate victory on the mound.
With the series win, the Bulldogs begin conference play on a strong note as they look to build momentum in the HBCU Athletic Conference schedule.
