The 2026 season came to a close for the Tougaloo College Bulldogs in a hard-fought three-game series against Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. Although the Bulldogs narrowly missed qualifying for the conference tournament, the final weekend of the season showed the resilience, fight, and growth of a program continuing to move in the right direction.
Facing the division's top contender, Tougaloo opened the series with one of the biggest wins in recent program history, defeating Huston-Tillotson 8-6 on April 17 for the Bulldogs' first victory over the Rams.
Tougaloo's offense came alive with a balanced team effort, totaling nine hits in the historic win. Camden Armon led the charge at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Lekeidric Sutton added a strong performance, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while also stealing a base. Travaze Thomas continued the offensive momentum with a 2-for-4 outing and an RBI, while Graelan Shaffer added two hits and drove in a run of his own.
On the mound, Caleb Carter delivered a complete-game performance for the Bulldogs. Carter pitched all eight innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out two batters to earn the victory. His ability to battle through adversity and keep Tougaloo in control proved to be one of the biggest keys to the win.
The victory gave the Bulldogs confidence heading into the remainder of the series and marked a major milestone for the program against one of the conference's premier teams.
However, Huston-Tillotson responded quickly in game two with a dominant 15-0 victory.
Despite the tough result, Tougaloo continued competing throughout the contest. Chase Varnado accounted for the Bulldogs' lone extra-base hit with a double and scored one of Tougaloo's runs. Gage Lewis added a hit and a walk, while Robert Powe reached base and stole a base.
On the mound, Tony Bradley Jr. started the game and pitched four innings, recording three strikeouts. John Haggard provided relief over the final two innings, striking out three batters while continuing to battle against the Rams' explosive offense.
With their postseason hopes hanging in the balance, the Bulldogs entered the season finale determined to fight until the very end.
Tougaloo responded with one of its strongest offensive performances of the series but ultimately fell just short in an 8-7 loss that officially ended the Bulldogs' season.
The Bulldogs totaled 13 hits in the finale and kept pressure on Huston-Tillotson throughout the game. Robert Powe delivered a huge performance at the plate, finishing 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Camden Armon continued his impressive weekend, going 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Gage Lewis stayed hot offensively with a 3-for-5 performance and an RBI, while Graelan Shaffer added two hits and drove in another run.
Lekeidric Sutton once again made his presence felt, scoring two runs while driving in two RBIs and stealing another base. Decorian Poindexter also contributed offensively with a hit and a run scored.
James Magee turned in a gritty effort on the mound in the season finale, pitching 8.1 innings while striking out four batters. Despite allowing eight runs, Magee battled throughout the afternoon and gave the Bulldogs an opportunity to remain competitive until the final inning.
When the final out was recorded, Tougaloo's postseason hopes officially came to an end. Still, the series represented much more than wins and losses.
The Bulldogs proved they could compete with the conference's best team. They earned a historic first win over Huston-Tillotson, showed offensive firepower throughout the weekend, and continued fighting until the final inning of the season.
For the seniors, it marked the closing chapter of their Tougaloo careers. For the returning players, it became motivation for what lies ahead. And for the program as a whole, the series served as proof that Tougaloo baseball is continuing to take meaningful steps forward.
