Lady Bulldogs Open 2018 Season With Split
Jacksonville, Fl. - The Lady Bulldogs opened the 2018 campaign this weekend in Jacksonville, FL in the Mack Attack Volleyball Classic hosted by Edward Waters College. The Lady Bulldogs split on both days of the tournament; falling to Johnson & Wales University in straight sets before getting its first win and conference victory in a 3-2 battle against host school Edward Waters on Day 1 and falling with Florida Memorial University in another 3-2 battle before ending the classic with a straight sets win over Central State University.
In the Lady Bulldogs opener against Johnson & Wales University, the Lady Bulldogs started out very rocky and because of it, they received their first loss of the season. The Lady Bulldogs went down in straight sets with scores of 20-25, 17-25, 15-25. Megan Besecker led the Lady Bulldogs with 8 kills followed by Carolyne Edwards with 6 kills. Alexandra Jwainat had 26 assists and the defense was led by ShonTaesha Zeigler with 10 digs and Obadiah Montgomery with 7 blocks.
In its second match of the day, the Lady Bulldogs regrouped and prepared for a showdown, as the first conference match of the season was a good one that went to five set with the Lady Bulldogs pulling off the win. The Lady Bulldogs won the first set 25-17, but came up short in the next two 25-22 and 25-23 and the Lady Bulldogs found themselves in trouble of going 0-2 on opening day. But the Lady Bulldogs battled back to take set four 25-14 and force the match into a set 5. In the fifth set, the Lady Bulldogs went ahead and took care of business, grabbing a 15-5 set win to take a 3-2 match victory and claim its first win and conference win of the season.
Megan Besecker led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 kills followed by Carolyne Edwards with 11 kills. Alexandra Jwainat had 36 assists. The defense was led by Jedda Alcee with 16 digs and Obadiah Montgomery with 8 blocks.
On Day 2 of the Mack Attack Classic, the Lady Bulldogs faced off against Florida Memorial University in what was another 3-2 battle. After dropping the first two sets 25-19, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves facing a straight sets sweep by FMU. But the Lady Bulldogs did not lay down; they fought back to force the match to five sets with a 28-26 third set win and a 25-22 fourth set win. The fifth set was a dog fight, but it was FMU that prevailed over the Lady Bulldogs 15-12 to win the match.
Megan Besecker led the way with 11 kills. Carolyne Edwards followed with 9 kills. Alexandra Jwainat had 22 assists. Jedda Alcee led the defense with 17 digs and Obadiah Montgomery had 7 blocks.
In the final match of the tourney, the Lady Bulldogs swept Central State University with scored os 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 to claim its second victory of the season. Carolyne Edwards led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 kills followed by Megan Besecker with 10 kills. Alexandra Jwainat had 33 assists. Jedda Alcee had 19 digs and Obadiah Montgomery had 8 blocks. Montgomery was selected to the All-Tournament Team for her performance in the tournament.
