LADY BULLDOGS CAPTURE 1ST WIN OF THE SEASON
The Lady Bulldogs and head coach Yolanda Cartlidge came into Monday night's match winless for the season and were in need of a boost to kick off the 2nd half of the season. Coach Cartlidge inserted sophomore guard Tremayia Weatherspoon into the starting lineup and she provided excellent defense, ball handling, and timely scoring for the lady bulldogs in their 1st win of the season. Weatherspoon scored 8 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and had 3 steals Tougaloo in their route of the Voorhees Lady Tigers 79-44.
The Lady Bulldogs cranked up their defensive pressure early in the first half causing 7 lady Tiger turnovers and holding them to 18 first half points. The lady Bulldogs' defensive dominance continued throughout the 2nd half as they held Voorhees to 26 second half points and caused 21 turnovers for the game.
The Lady Bulldogs had 4 players to score double figures in the game. Senior DeAnna Bolton led Tougaloo with 20 points off the bench. Freshmen Dymond Jackson and Montoria Atkinson had their best performances of the season with stellar play in the post on both sides of the ball. Jackson scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds meanwhile Montoria Atkinson scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. Senior Re'Yada Stinner paced Tougaloo with 12 points and 11 assists.
The Voorhees Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Krotofia Smart who scored 16 points in the game and Kimberly Gordon added 12 points and 17 rebounds.
DeAnna Bolton felt like the team put forth its best effort on both offense and defense thus far this season. She said, " The difference in tonight's game was that everybody played their role and personally I made some shots early on and just kept shooting."
The Lady Bulldogs (1-13, 1-3) will take on the Lady Blue Devils of Dillard University at home on Saturday, January 24th at 3pm.
